Abstract

This study assessed monthly market arrivals and modal prices for the five highest-volume crops traded at Agricultural Market Committee (AMC) Vantimamidi, Telangana, from April 2021 to March 2026. Sweet corn, field beans, bitter gourd, kheera (cucumber) and beans accounted for 1,071,941 of the 1,897,755 quintals recorded in the market (approximately 56%). Pearson correlation, ordinary least squares regression, price flexibility and ratio-to-moving-average seasonal indices were used to describe the relationships. Correlations were also calculated after removing calendar-month seasonal effects. Raw arrivals–price correlations were negative for sweet corn (r = −0.24), field beans (r = −0.27), kheera (r = −0.23) and beans (r = −0.54), but weakly positive for bitter gourd (r = +0.10). Arrivals accounted for 1–7.5% of monthly price variation in four crops and 29% in beans. After deseasonalisation, the inverse association remained statistically significant for sweet corn (r = −0.41) and was borderline for beans (r = −0.28; p = 0.053), whereas it was not significant for field beans or kheera. Seasonal arrival peaks occurred in July–September for sweet corn, during winter for field beans and beans, in June–July and November for bitter gourd, and in March–April for kheera. The findings indicate that relationships between local arrivals and modal prices are crop-specific and frequently influenced by seasonality. Interpretation of monthly price movements should therefore consider seasonal patterns alongside arrivals rather than using arrivals alone.
