Abstract

Disaster emergencies require timely first aid responses, and college students may serve as immediate responders within educational institutions and communities. This study assessed knowledge regarding first aid management of disaster emergencies and evaluated the effectiveness of a structured learning programme among college students in Nadiad City. A quantitative, one-group pre-test and post-test pre-experimental design was used. The sample comprised 130 students selected through convenience sampling from selected arts and commerce colleges. Data were collected using a structured knowledge questionnaire with a reported reliability coefficient of r = 0.9. In the pre-test, 70.0% of students had average knowledge, 22.3% had poor knowledge, and 7.7% had good knowledge. Following the structured learning programme, 73.1% had good knowledge, 20.0% had average knowledge, and 6.9% had poor knowledge. The mean knowledge score increased from 17.03 ± 4.37 in the pre-test to 23.26 ± 4.32 in the post-test, with a mean difference of 6.23. The paired t-test showed a statistically significant difference between pre-test and post-test knowledge scores (t = 13.82, p < 0.001). The association analysis was reported as non-significant; however, individual chi-square values, degrees of freedom, and p-values for the demographic variables were not presented. These findings indicate that the structured learning programme was associated with improved knowledge of first aid management for disaster emergencies among the participating students.
